A collar tie is a very important framing member in your roof system. See the diagram below? That short, horizontal framing member is a collar tie. Often times on a home inspection, I see this framing member missing, but that is not a good thing.
A collar tie carries a lot of weight and stress. Take a look at that illustration again. See all of those arrows showing you how the roof moves? Without collar ties in a rafter system the roof would be horribly uneven and eventually fail (albeit down the road).
